The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business

The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business

Getting an MBA is an expensive choice-one almost impossible to justify regardless of the state of the economy. Even the elite schools like Harvard and Wharton offer outdated, assembly-line programs that teach you more about PowerPoint presentations and unnecessary financial models than what it takes to run a real business. You can get better results (and save hundreds of thousands of dollars) by skipping business school altogether.

A recent report looking into the wages of teachers has shown am amazing high number are achieving a six figure sum each year. Each have passed various degrees.

As many parents send their children back into the care of public education professionals this week, newly released data shows how much those professionals get paid.

According to a database compiled by Transparent California, more than 7,500 school district employees in San Diego County received six-figure compensation packages last year, including 4,600 teachers.

The highest paid educator was Poway Superintendent John Collins. To oversee the education of 35,000 K-12 students, Collins received $393,284 in 2013, a figure which includes district costs for his benefits, stipends and other perks. Collins did not respond to telephone and email requests for an interview.

The data shows that 359 teachers in the Poway district also received six-figure compensation in 2013.

Poways highest paid teacher is Susan Michelena, who has her masters degree and teaches regular and A.P. U.S. History at Rancho Bernardo High, as well as civics and U.S. History for Poways online school.

After 24 years in the district, Michelenas total compensation topped $132,130, including $22,106 in benefits, according to the data.

I am on step 24 of Poway Unifieds salary schedule, which is published on the website. In addition, I teach an extra class for the virtual high school, so I teach six classes, Michelena said. She said two $2,500 stipends also boosted her pay, one for serving as chair of the social science department and another for coaching the academic league.

Candy Smiley, president of the Poway Federation of Teachers, said the district saves when teachers take on extra duties. Smiley said the average teacher salary in the district is $75,000, which is too little.

Two main Universities are leading the way in creating new masters degrees, with the aim of creating new amounts of students in these exciting new fields.

University of Pikeville and Western Kentucky University have partnered to make three health-related masters degree programs available to students in eastern Kentucky and provide access to WKU students in UPIKEs College of Optometry.

The partnership will guarantee five slots per year for WKU students to enroll in the optometry program at UPIKE.

This is a unique collaboration between private and public institutions, and although geography separates us by a nearly 300-mile span from east to west across the commonwealth, technology and the willingness of both our institutions to meet the needs of Kentuckys communities wherever they may be makes this partnership possible, WKU President Gary A. Ransdell said.

WKU will offer a Speech-Language Pathology pathway program this fall that includes all of the pre-requisite courses students need to qualify for the masters program in Communication Disorders, which will be available in fall 2015.

Both the SLP and masters programs are fully online. The masters program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

The Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) will also be available by fall 2015. This online program is designed so that current UPIKE medical school students and those completing their residency program can complete both the MHA and their medical degree simultaneously. The program is a member of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration

In fall 2016, WKU will offer the Master of Social Work at UPIKE, a web-based format. WKUs MSW Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

UPIKE is also offering access to WKU students seeking careers in optometry.
